HOW TO MAKE A RED VELVET SHEET CAKE FROM SCRATCH

Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet (11X7) with parchment paper. Make certain to grease the paper and edges with nonstick cooking spray, set aside.

Grab a large bowl and whisk the cocoa powder, baking powder, flour, and salt. Set aside.

In a different bowl, beat the sugar and butter. Then add in the eggs and sour cream and mix until smooth.

Combine the red food coloring, vanilla, and buttermilk.

Add in the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix. Next, take and add in half the buttermilk mixture and mix. Add in the rest of the flour mixture and mix, then mix in the rest of the buttermilk mixture as well.

Combine the vinegar and baking soda into a small bowl. Once you do that, add to the batter and fold until it is combined.

Put the mixture and spread it out over the baking sheet. Put in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Remove and let cool on wire cooling rack.

Once cool, it’s time to make the icing. Beat the cream cheese and butter. Add in the powdered sugar and half of the heavy cream and mix. Add more of the milk in 1/2 tablespoons at a time if you need to make it thinner.

TIPS TO MAKE A RED VELVET CAKE

Make certain that you don’t over mix the ingredients in this cake recipe. That is a simple way that you’ll have the cake turn out to be hard and chewy.

Also, be certain to let the cake cool completely before you attempt to frost it. Otherwise, the frosting will melt and it will just soak into your cake.

IS RED VELVET CAKE JUST A CHOCOLATE CAKE?

For the most part, this is what people tend to think. But there are many added ingredients that cause this to be different than a chocolate cake. The frosting is also different, too.

WHAT MAKES RED VELVET CAKE DIFFERENT?

One of the biggest differences between a red velvet cake is that it’s made using cocoa. This can give it a dark coloring, which is what the red food coloring is then necessary.

WHY DO YOU PUT VINEGAR IN A RED VELVET CAKE?

The vinegar reacts with the other ingredients to make it rise. And don’t worry, you won’t notice the taste at all as it basically bakes right out of the cake.
